Procrastinating On a Large Project? Think Lke a Beaver!

Before I began writing my youth sports parenting book, Home Team Advantage, a close friend - who was herself  the author of four bestselling books - gave me a short book called Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by by Anne Lamott.

Reflections of a European summer and a season of Races

Graveyard Call, was the event we flew to France for.  It is an IGSA event (International Gravity Sport Association). This was where we spent our first few jet-lagged days of our 17 day adventure.  Argonay is a small village at the outskirts of Annecy, a lovely holiday destination in the French Alps.  I highly recommend Annecy for a trip alternative to Paris--though we loved Paris.

Dirt, Drama and Distance

It is late on Wednesday night, well, actually it is very early Thursday morning and in light of recent actions, I just can't sleep.  My mind keeps ruminating over the past weekend and our recent trip to the San Diego area for Nicholas' final BMX National event until the Grands.  It was an emotional weekend, as it is his last race as a 7-year-old and also because it was a very difficult weekend for him emotionally and mentally.

Should I Be Ashamed For Feeling This Way About My Daughter's Sport Team?

If anyone who comes on this site has read anything I’ve written you should pretty much be aware that I’m on a one man crusade to stop coaches from abusing some kids through the practicing of benching, or essentially giving a player on the team either no, or very, very little, meaningful playing time.

No Bull: Sports Drinks Fuel Young Athletes Playing Team Sports

Sometimes you just can't believe what you read online or in the newspaper.

You may have seen the headlines or heard the buzz:  "Energy Drinks May Give Young Sports Teams An Edge, Study Says" trumpeted one; "Energy drinks boost stamina, enhance performance of young team players," said another.

Time to rush out to the nearest supermarket to stock up on energy drinks for your young athlete. Right?

A Scottish study shows that sports drinks, consumed right before and at 15-minute
intervals during prolonged stop-and-go team sports such as soccer,
football, ice hockey, basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse, actually help young athletes play better, longer.

One Year Older and Miles Forward

It has been awhile since I have contributed a blog article to this website; a year of grief, chaos, school, travel and sporting events keeping me from my passion of writing.  Although I have not written here, I continue to visit this site and my previous articles to revisit just how far Nicholas has come as an athlete an individual and, more importantly, just how far our family has come as a "team".

Know the Signs and Symptoms of Football Related Concussions.

Hello Everyone, Coach Bobby Hosea here.  Now that football season is upon us, there are some very important facts about football related concussions all participants should know.

Parents, if you have a child playing tackle football on any level of football competition and they are complaining of headaches, nausea, dizziness or seeing flashes of light when they collide with other players, these are not "normal" parts of the game, they are signs and symptoms of football related concussions.

Sexual Abuse in Sport: The Problem No One Wants To Talk About

On July 12, UNICEF's Innocenti Research Center in Florence, Italy released an important report on violence against children in sport in industrialized countries, including the United States.

The report found a troubling lack of awareness of and education on child protection issues among youth sports coaches, parents, and other stakeholders. To combat the problem it recommends improvements in data collection and knowledge generation about violence to children in sport, development of structures and systems for eliminating and preventing such violence (including promotion of ethical guidelines and codes of conduct), and education, awareness-raising and training.

How Early are Personality Traits Formed?

Last week our twin grandsons were born without Caesarian section.  Brendan appeared first at six pounds, four ounces.  He had been in the "ready" position for over a month.  Then Jeffrey appeared, in the breach position.  Fortunately, through manipulation he was brought out butt first and began to breathe after thirty seconds.  He weighed five pounds, fourteen ounces.  Both boys had fair complexions like their sister and dark blue eyes.  Within a week of nursing they had gained the half-pound back, lost in the hospital.  We are all ecstatic!
