In an inspiring and thought-provoking SmartTeams Talk, Coach for America founder and former NFL player, Joe Ehrmann, offers four specific ways coaches can use their unique position in a society in which sports is our "secular religion" to transform the lives of their players and reclaim sports' educational, social and ethical role, first, by seeing sports as a co-curricular, not extra-curricular, activity; second, by viewing sports as a place where athletes on both teams are engaged in a mutual quest for excellence, not a "I win, you lose" game; third, by using sports to build character, not a win-at-all-costs attitude; and, finally, by teaching male athletes a curriculum emphasizing healthy masculinity and respect for women and girls, empowers them to have the moral courage to call out other boys and men on sexist language and violence towards women and girls, and to reject racial stereotyping.
