USA Basketball oversees all aspects of basketball in the United States , from amateur to professional, and is responsible for selecting the U.S Olympic team.

YBOA promotes youth basketball worldwide, sanctions local, regional, and national tournaments, and hosts three major tournaments each July. It also offers league development, educational clinics, and scholarship programs. The mission statement of YBOA is that "through participation, YBOA is dedicated to educate and motivate each member while encouraging teamwork, sportsmanship and fun through the spirit of basketball."

The AAU boys' teams are organized by grade level, starting with 3rd grade and under, and going through to the end of high school. The girl's organization sponsors travel teams that compete in local and regional tournaments, culminating in an annual national tournament in Disney World. Teams are grouped by age, with divisions for ages 10 and under through age 18 and under.
