Unmarked Detour: Lengthy Concussion Recovery Disrupted Family
When a child's recovery from concussion is lengthy, it disrupts the family, says Dorothy Bedford, whose daughter Heidi took 14 months to recover from a concussion she suffered playing hockey. "Your life as a parent essentially stops," she says. In particular, a concussed teenager such as Heidi, Bedford notes, "needs a lot of supervision" to keep them from engaging in activities - such as playing video games or even watching fast-paced, recent movies - that can slow down their recovery from post-concussion syndrome.
