Boxing Footwear
Boxing shoes must be made from lightweight material because boxers jump around a lot in their shoes (when jump-roping and fighting in matches) and they shouldn't wear anything that will slow them down. Most boxing shoes are made from suede and leather.
You do not have to buy a pair of expensive shoes, but you should consider a nice leather pair because it's the most comfortable and provides good ventilation.
A couple things to remember when purchasing boxing shoes:
Headgear
Boxing and martial arts headgear is worn with the intention of protecting the fighter from cuts, nicks and scratches, rather than insulating against concussions. The exposed face and chin in boxing head gear, and the soft foam construction, do not protect against serious head injuries, namely concussions. This, however, is the nature of the sport and should be considered when starting your child out in either martial arts or boxing. Your son or daughter will be getting punched in the face and head repeatedly if they engage in fighting. Mouth guards are even more important for reducing risk of dental and jaw injuries than the head gear itself. If your son or daughter decides that fighting is the sport for them, invest in the best mouth protection you can buy.
