Bullying

We hear so much about coaches who yell at kids and parents who yell at coaches and parents who yell at the other parents. It is enough to drive you crazy. But, how about the kids who are bullying kids on their own team? Has your child ever been bullied enough for him to drop off of the team?

Kids are bullying a gay boy on the team.

Yes, I know just what this is all about but have no idea what to do. Two kids are harrassing a gay boy and this has gone on all season. I want to report them to the coach but this would go against my sons wishes. Now that the season is almost over maybe the best thing I can do is report it to the schools social worker but even this could casuse a ripple effect. Can someone from MomsTeam help me out on this one. I feel so bad for the boy.

Bullying Update

We have gotten to know 'petes" family and are going to help him adjust to the new school this summer by starting some church meetings around respect. Has anyone tried this with entire teams before? They will all be playing soccer in the fall and anything we can do now seems like it could only help. Any ideas?

All I can say is that

All I can say is that continued harassment is unacceptable.  A few questions- Is this boy openly gay? Do your son's see what is going on? Furthermore, the coach, who should be looking after the whole team, should not allow this type of behavior, EVER.  My recommendation is that coaches suspend or kick off the team any players who violate what should be a special bond between youth athletes.   I can understand your reluctance to intervene, but think ten years into the future, this type of abuse can have long standing affects on a young kid...
