SmartTeams™ Talks: Safe4Athlete's Katherine Starr Says Four Steps To Preventing Sexual Abuse Of Athletes

In a powerful and frank SmartTeams Talk, two-time Olympic athlete and Safe4Athletes founder, Katherine Starr, says that there are four steps that need to be taken to prevent sexual abuse of athletes by coaches: (1) requiring coaches to become educated about sexual abuse and harrassment, setting boundaries with athletes, and teaching them to hold each other accountable; (2) establishing codes of conduct under which all coaches, regardless of their level of success, are held to the highest ethical standards; (3) appointing independent advocates for athletes to whom they can talk if they have a problem with a coach; and (4) investigating every alleged sexual abuse by coaches, not waiting until there are multiple allegations of abuse.
