  • Shin splints are the most common overuse injury in track. Here are some treatment and prevention tips from two-time Olympic track athlete, Meredith Rainey Valmon, and University of Maryland athletic trainer, Laura Ann Christopher:

    Treatment tips

    1. See a doctor.
    2. Prolonged RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
    3. Anti-inflammation medication (ibuprofen etc.);
    4. Ice legs after trainingUse heating pads
    5. Change training routine

    1. Work with an athletic trainer to develop a safe training program.
    2. Don't over train.
    3. Train on softer surfaces.
    4. Avoid abrupt changes in training surfaces; and
    5. Wear the right shoes.

Most of the injuries kids suffer in sports are to their muscles, joints and bones in the form of strains, sprains and fractures. Many are the result of overuse and thus are preventable.

Our goal is to provide comprehensive prevention and treatment information on all of the different types of musculoskelatal injuries kids suffer in sports.
